Stephen Girard (born , Bordeaux, France—died Decem, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.) was an American financier and philanthropist whose purchase of government bonds during the War of provided economic support for continuation of U.S. military campaigns. Girard shipped out to sea at the age of 14 and by was captain of a ship involved in U.S. coastal trade.
