Biography Francis Bacon – Lord Verulam, and Viscount St. Alban’s – was both philosopher and statesman, born at York House in the Strand, London in , the youngest son of Sir Nicolas Bacon, Lord Keeper and his second wife, the daughter of Sir Anthony Cooke, and sister-in-law of Lord Burghley, the great minister of Queen Elizabeth.
